The Tent & Chain Bank of the Goldfields

Step back in time to the raw and rugged Goldfields of Western Australia in the 1890s, where a young bank official named Thomas Harkness was sent on an extraordinary mission—to open a bank in the fledgling town of White Feather, now known as Kanowna.

Armed with little more than a safe, a tent, and a great deal of determination, Harkness braved broken trains, desert dust, eccentric characters, and makeshift banking conditions to bring financial order to the frontier. In this episode, you’ll hear his vivid, humorous, and surprisingly touching recollections of life on the edge of civilisation.

From guarding a broken-down train to hypnotising his clerk for pain relief, and building a “bank” secured with a chain and padlock, Harkness’s story is a true testament to the spirit of the early Goldfields.
