Every family collects its share of legends, whispered secrets, and haunting photos with unknown faces. My Nanna, starting as a passionate bush historian, set out years ago to uncover those mysteries—from whispered scandals, to the daily routines that shaped her ancestors’ lives. Her enthusiasm was contagious. Soon, relatives from distant branches were pitching in: not just to complete the family tree, but to revive it with stirring stories of failures, triumphs, laughter, sorrow, and, yes, a long-forgotten murder. There was something particularly thrilling about realising one of our skeletons had made headlines long ago.

Decades after Nanna finished her research, her typewritten stories stuffed between newspaper clippings and family records, I began cataloguing her legacy.
